One of my more popular kits is this trio of pumpkins and a black cat, called Spooky Trio.
The kit comes with orange wool for the back of the orange pumpkin.
I am running low on the orange wool,
but I haven’t found any orange wool that was just the right color for future kits.
So, I decided to try dyeing some myself.
I ordered some Cushings dye in orange
and pre-soaked my natural colored wool in water and a little bit of mild detergent.
After dissolving the dye in some hot water,
I put the wool on to simmer for 20 minutes.
Then, I turned off the burner, and added some vinegar and let it sit for 20 minutes.
And it was very orange! A pretty color of orange, but too bright for the pumpkins.
So, I put some of it in the dye pot again, this time with some of my homemade walnut dye.
It turned out the perfect color!
The top wool is the walnut-overdyed; the bottom is the plain orange.
The embroidery floss is the color used in the Spooky Trio kit.
Next time I run low on orange wool, I can just get out my dye pot!
