In this primitive craft tutorial, I am going to cover a composition notebook to make the journal more my style. I chose to cover it (mostly) with printable papers with a patriotic theme.

Covering the Journal:
I started with a plain composition notebook. These journals are easy to cover and a nice size for taking with me on the go!
I wanted to add a pretty but primitive looking paper to completely cover the journal so I chose these printable coffee dyed lace pages. I used a matte finish ModPodge to adhere the pages to the front and back of the journal, leaving the spine uncovered.
After the glue was dry, I used an X-acto knife to cut away the excess paper. I then printed this Betsy Ross Flag label so it measured about 5-1/2″ wide. I also used a strip of scrapbooking paper, some numbers from this set and a hang tag with an eagle and a flag from this set.
I cut out all of the elements, antiqued the edges of each, and glued them on with more ModPodge.
For the back, I printed the ecru zipper from this clipart set as large as I could make it and cut it out. About half way up the opened zipper part, I folded the zipper back so the opening would be larger. I cut a piece of red check scrapbook paper to fit in the zipper opening and then cut out three blue stars. Again, I adhered everything with the ModPodge.
After everything was dry, I applied a thin coat of ModPodge to both the front and back covers to seal everything.
