What is Punch Needle?
Punch needle is loops of fiber that have been punched through a foundation fabric in order to make a design, usually intended as a decorative item for the home.
How does Punch Needle work:
Punch Needle is stitched from the back of the fabric. Punch needle tools work by punching a threaded needle through the fabric. The tool leaves a loop of thread with each punch. The tightness of the fabric holds the loops in place. Each area of a pattern can be punched with a different color of thread, creating a beautiful design.
A punch needle pattern is a line drawing, like an embroidery pattern. However, an embroidery pattern is usually embroidered along the lines on the drawing to show the design. With punch needle, each area is colored in with colorful threads.
Types of Punch Needle:
There are two types of punch needle: rug punch needle and punch needle embroidery. Each type has different punch needle tools and foundation fabric.
Rug Punch Needle uses larger fibers such as yarn and creates loops on a foundation fabric of monks cloth. It is a great choice for pillows and rugs or other larger projects. Rug Punch needle has seen a recent revival with an interest in punching modern designs.
Punch Needle embroidery uses embroidery floss or other thin fibers to create loops in weavers cloth, a cotton / polyester woven fabric. You can use other types of foundation fabrics for punch needle embroidery, in fact, I’ve even punched on a denim shirt! However, weavers cloth is the best choice for beginners. Punch Needle embroidery is perfect for small projects.
The punch needle patterns on this site are punch needle embroidery patterns.

Punch Needle Patterns for Beginners:
The best punch needle pattern for a beginner is a small project. If you already know how to sew, I would recommend one of my bowl filler or ornament patterns. If you don’t sew, you can still do punch needle! This stacked sheep pattern is small and would be perfect for a beginner! Or, choose a different small flat pattern. A flat pattern is perfect for a non-sewer because it can be glued onto something for display! Check out these other finishing ideas.
