In this wool dyeing tutorial, I am going to over dye some vivid plaid wool in order to tone down the color for future primitive rug hooking or applique projects.

Over Dye Plaid Wool:
I had some plaid wool that was too vivid for primitive rug hooking. It also wasn’t quite felted enough. So I decided to over dye the wool and at the same time felt it a little bit more so it would work well for either wool applique or rug hooking projects.
To over dye this plaid wool, I followed my regular dyeing process. If you are new to dyeing wool, be sure to check out my tutorial here.
I started off by using Cushing’s taupe dye. This plaid wool is a pretty small piece and weighed a little less than 1/4 of a pound and I didn’t want to dye full strength so I used 1/4 teaspoon of the dye.
After the dye bath was exhausted, I decided it needed a little bit more toning down, so I added some Cushing’s black walnut dye as well.
The finished result wasn’t exactly what I was hoping, but it is a lot more toned down and more felted from the simmering process. I think it would be good fit for a fall project.
