I used a leftover small piece of monks cloth and some leftover worms to hook this patriotic hooked mug rug. It is based on the American flag with red, white, and blue stripes, a star, and 1776.

Make the Hooked Mug Rug:
I had a small leftover piece of monks cloth that I used to make the mug rug. If you prefer, you could use other foundation fabric. Draw your own pattern, or you can use my patriotic mug rug pattern, available in my free pattern library. This pattern makes a 4-1/2″ circular mug rug.
I used #4 cut 1/8″ worms in red, white, and blue felted wools. I hooked the top stripe blue with a white star. Working down the circle, I hooked a red stripe, white stripe, and another red stripe. I hooked the 1776 with white.
After hooking, I steam pressed the rug, trimmed the empty foundation fabric to around 1/2″ and serged the edges. Then I steam pressed the empty foundation fabric to the back of the hooked rug.
I chose the same blue felted wool I used for hooking the top stripe for the backing. With the wrong sides of the backing and the rug together, I used the rug as a template and cut out a piece of felted wool just slightly larger than the rug.

Using thread to match the backing, I whipstitched the backing to the hooked rug, catching the folded over monks cloth and the edge of the wool backing. I used some quilting clips to hold things together while I was sewing.
While you do this, be careful not to catch any of the hooked loops in the stitching. As you stitch, the felted wool will fold over and cover up the fold on the foundation fabric.

If you find the backing is too large, you can cut it back as needed.
If desired, you could add some plastic canvas between the layers to add more substance to the mug rug.
