I like the shape and style of this basket, but it just looks too new for my decor. So, I decided to give the basket a makeover by giving it the look of a little bit of age.
I have painted baskets before to give them an aged look, but for this project, I wanted a more natural look.

Aging the Basket:
For this process, you will need vinegar and super fine steel wool and a glass jar with a lid.
Tear up the steel wool into small pieces and fill the jar with these pieces.

Pour plain white vinegar into the jar to cover the steel wool. Put the lid on the jar and let it set for at least a day. Mine set for an entire week. I am guessing the longer it sits, the more potent the stain will become.

It will get a dirty, pond water look to it.

If you want, you can strain out any pieces of steel wool remaining in the solution.
Caution – this has an odor and is best used outside!
Use a foam paintbrush and paint the solution onto the basket just like you would a stain. Paint the inside and outside both. Let it dry.

If needed, you can go back and touch up areas that you missed the first time. I had to do a little touch up so I used a smaller paint brush to get into the smaller places I missed.
