In this rug hooking tutorial, I am going to make some hooked rug cone flowers. These will be on a wire stem so you can bend them to suit your flower arrangement.

Prepare the Flower Stems:
Take three brown fabric wrapped floral wire stems and twist them together. This will make a more substantial stem than just using a single wire.
Make the Cone Flower Centers:
Using monks cloth as the foundation fabric, hook a 2-1/4″ circle for each flower you wish to make. I used brown and tan #8 worms.
Press the circles, let dry and then trim edges to around 1″ and serge.
Run a gathering stitch on the empty monks cloth close to the edge of hooking all the way around the circle. Before you pull the gathering tight, take the prepared stem and poke it through one of the holes on the monks cloth and bring it out through another hole. Fold the wire over where it is poked through the fabric. Gather the circle and push the empty fabric to the inside of the circle. Add more stuffing if needed. Tie off.

Cone Flower Petals:
Cut strips of felted wool 7″ long and 1/2″ wide. (I used mottled looking wools.) You will need from 10-15 petals for each flower.
Cut the ends of each petal to curved points to resemble flower petals.
Arrange the petals into a circle with the center of each petal touching.

Sew the petals together by tacking them through the center of the circle.
Stitch the petals to the flower center, first through the center of the flower (between hooked loops) and then around the outer edge.
If desired, you can tie on a 9″ x 3/4″ torn strip of fabric for leaves.
