To fill up my wooden bowl this winter, I decided to make some primitive ice skate bowl fillers. These could be used during the Christmas season, but I will use them in January and February for some primitive winter decor.

Make the Skates:
To make the ice skates, cut a front and back from Warm and Natural cotton batting for each boot using this ice skate pattern. To make a pair of ice skates, you will need to cut out 4 boots. Flip the pattern over to cut 2 of them so you will have front and backs for each skate.
With right sides together, pin each pair of boots together and sew along the outside edges using a 1/8″ seam and leaving the top open for turning.

Clip inside corner and around curves and turn the boots right side out.
Stuff boots to about 3/4″ from the top.
To make the ice skate blade, cut a piece of rusty craft wire (20-24 gauge) eight inches long. About 3/4″ from one end, bend the wire at a 90 degree angle. Poke this into the bottom of the boot 3/4″ from the heel end.
I had to poke a pin into the boot first and wiggle it around in order to make a hole for the wire.
Bend the wire around to look like a skate blade, ending with a spiral at the toe. (See photo below.)

Use a needle and thread to tack the wire to the boot at the heel and at the toe.
Cut a strip of Warm & Natural about 5/8″ wide and long enough to go around the top of the boot. Glue this onto the top of the boot for a cuff.

Decorate & Grunge the Ice Skates:
To decorate, you could add some bells, pom poms, buttons, or sew on some laces. I chose to add laces using black button thread. On the ends of the laces, I added some small black pom poms.
If desired, you can add some grunge to the skates also. I lightly dabbed some antique wax onto the skates to grunge mine.
