Instead of hooking loops as is done in regular rug hooking, proddy rug hooking hooks short strips of wool to make a fluffy, fringed look. Just a few things you could use proddy hooking for are bunny tails, flamingo wings, and flower petals. There are special proddy hooking tools you can purchase, but I have found proddy hooking can be done with just a regular rug hook tool.

Proddy Rug Hooking:
If you have woodworking skills (or know someone who has woodworking skills), you can make a simple tool to help cut even proddy wool strips.
Don’t worry, even without that tool, cutting proddy strips is easy with some scissors or a rotary cutter and ruler.
The strips can vary in width and length, depending on the desired finished look. You can also leave the ends straight, angled, curved, etc. All of these changes will affect how the finished project looks.
If you have different sized rug hook tools, choose one with a larger hook. If you only have one size, that’s ok too. Just use that one.
The samples here were hooked onto monks cloth. It is actually easier to pull the proddy strips through the primitive linen foundation fabric.
I am not really sure if this is considered proddy hooking, but it is similar. To make the flower loops, start with a really long strip of wool. Pull the end of the strip up to be as long as you want the loops. Bring the first loop up in the hole right next to the end you just pulled up. Bring the loop to be as tall as the end piece. Follow your shape around and pull another loop up to the same height. You can put the rug hook tool through both loops to make sure they are the same height.

For this next project, we used 1/2″ wide strips. You can fold the strips in half and cut some of the width off to make the middle of the strips narrower. This does make it easier to pull the strips through the foundation fabric but it also changes how the strips stand.

Pull half of the strip up to the front of the project. Go into the next hole over and pull the other half of the strip up. That’s it. That proddy strip is complete! If you cut out the middle, the skinny part of the strip should be right in the middle, attached to the foundation fabric.

In the above picture, the outer two strips were cut to be more narrow in the middle and the center strip was not cut (it is a rectangle). So you can see how this affects the look.
