In this craft tutorial, I am going to make a primitive style patriotic flag bowl filler. You can nestle bowl fillers in with other decor in a wooden treenware bowl or put them on a shelf.
This flag bowl filler was easy to make by using some fabric scraps and stuffing.

Make the Flag Bowl Fillers:
I rummaged through my fabric scrap basket to find a red and khaki striped fabric and blue fabric with tiny stars.

The pieces of fabric weren’t quite grungy enough for me, so I coffee dyed them.
After the fabric was dry, I ironed out the wrinkles and cut the pieces to size. You will want the striped fabric to be 8 inches wide and 7-1/4 inches tall and the blue to be two inches tall by 2-1/2 inches wide. (You can tear the blue piece for a more antique look.)
Fold the striped fabric in half, wrong sides together with the fold at the top so it is 8″ x 3-5/8″. Pin the blue piece at the top left corner, 1/4″ from the top and 1/2″ from the left side. Only pin to the top layer of fabric.
Open the folded fabric back up. Use a running stitch to sew the blue piece onto the striped piece. I used 3 strands of ecru embroidery floss.

Note: In my photo above, my blue piece is a 2″ square. I decided later that it needed to be wider.
Fold the red stripe in half, right sides together, so it is again 8″ x 3-5/8″ and pin. Using a 1/4″ seam allowance, sew along the sides and bottom, leaving an opening on the bottom for turning.
Clip the corners and turn the pillow right side out. Press the seams. Stuff as desired. Hand stitch the opening closed.
Decorate the bowl filler as desired. I used some jute, a rusty star, some coffee dyed cheesecloth, and some dried sweet annie.
