In this primitive craft tutorial, I will transform a plain battery operated candle into a primitive grungy candle with a star. I have grunged small tea light candles before, but I wanted to also add a primitive star to this larger one. I wasn’t sure how to do it, but my experiment worked really well!

Add the Star:
To add the star to the candle, cut a primitive star from a piece of black tissue paper. Apply ModPodge to the candle where you want the star to attach the star. Brush some ModPodge over the top of the star. I wouldn’t want to use this tissue paper method on a real candle as it could be a fire hazard.

Grunge the Candle:
Mix some ModPodge, instant coffee, and cinnamon in a paint tray. The more coffee and cinnamon you use, the grungier the candle will look.
Brush this mixture over the entire candle. Don’t forget to grunge the top of the candle too! I used a darker mixture for the inside of the candle than I used for the outside.

Sprinkle some finely ground instant coffee over the top edge. DAB the instant coffee with some of the ModPodge mixture.

Let this completely dry. If needed, you can add another coat or just touch up in areas.
