I have several of these tiny vintage yo-yos, so I thought it would be fun to make a little primitive summer ditty bag using some yo-yos as flowers. I printed out some old looking documents to roll up and add to the ditty bag so it would look like a child’s school bag.

Make the Primitive Ditty Bag:
I used an old feed sack for the bag, but I ended up painting the lines and stenciling the number on the front so you could follow the directions using any coarse weave fabric that you have. Osnaburg fabric would work well if you don’t have access to a feed sack.
Cut a piece 9″ x 4-1/2″ of the fabric you chose for the ditty bag.
Use frog tape to create a long stencil so you can paint lines along one long edge of the fabric. I put one piece of the tape right along the edge of the fabric and the other piece about 1/4″ away from the first. I used brown craft paint and a stencil brush to stencil the line.

I stenciled a number on the top right side and smaller stripes on each side of the first stripe.

Let the paint dry.
Fold the fabric in half with the wrong sides together and sew or glue along the two sides using a 1/4″ seam. Unravel the edges.
Arrange your yo-yos and some green RicRac or Ribbon for flower stems on the front of the bag. Glue in place. I tied on a small piece of thin jute where the flower stems all come together.
Cut another piece of the ditty bag fabric 5″ x 1/2″. Unravel the edges. Fold in half and glue the two ends together. Glue the two ends inside the bag on the left side at the top to make a handle. Decorate the handle as desired. I tied a piece of jute on the handle and hung a skeleton key. I also tied on a piece of crinkle ribbon to the handle.

If you want, you can add a little antiquing wax around the edges of the bag to make it look even more old and primitive.
