In this post, my Mom, an avid rug hooker, will be joining us again with another rug hooking tutorial. She is going to show us how she hooks letters.
It is fairly easy to hook letters with straight lines – such as a capital F. The curved letters, like O or S can be more difficult. She is going to show us her letter hooking techniques while hooking this rug hooking pattern.

Hooking Straight Line Letters:
We will start by hooking a capital letter F. She likes to start hooking at the top, right point of the letter. She follows the line of the letter, making her loops centered on the line.
You want a pronounced turn on the corner of the letter. When she gets to the vertical part of the F, she turns the project 90 degrees and hooks going down the base of the letter.

When she got to the second horizontal line, she stopped hooking the vertical and started once again at the end of that horizontal piece.
When she got to the vertical part of the letter F, she turned the project 90 degrees and finished hooking down the base of the letter.

Sometimes when you are working the letters, it can look funny. Don’t worry, once you add the background, it will look better!
Rug Hooking Curved Letters:
When you hook the curved letters, you want to make sure there is plenty of space on the inside of the letters. You might need to hook more towards the outside of the line instead of right on the line of the letter, depending on the size of the letter.
Instead of hooking down a straight line, you will need to go over and down spaces to create the curve. You will also rotate the loops as you hook and go around the circle.

Hooking a Straight & Curved Letter
For the letter r, she will hook the straight part first and then come back and hook the arched part of the letter.

If the letters don’t look right, don’t be afraid to pull out the loops and try again.
