In this post, I will show you how I made a hooked rug Santa sign. I will be making the sign by adding the hooked rug and other embellishments to an old cabinet panel board. This hooked rug Santa pattern is adjustable in height so you can make one to fit your board!

Prepare the Hooked Rug for Mounting:
After hooking the Santa, I steam pressed the hooked rug and let it dry. Then I serged all the way around the Santa, leaving about 1/2″ seam allowance. I used the presser foot of the serger as a guide up next to the edge of the hooking.

I then pressed all of the empty foundation fabric to the back and basted it down. Using a damp pressing cloth when pressing helps the foundation fabric lay flatter. I used monks cloth for this, but any foundation fabric should work for this process.
Choosing the Sign Decorations:
My board was long enough to be able to add some extra decor to it so I decided to make a little Christmas sign. For a previous project, I had purchased this Christmas sign digital bundle, so I chose one of those signs.
I printed out the sign on some tea stained paper in an appropriate size for this project, tore it to size, and grunged the paper a little more with my stamp pad.
I used handmade sewing pattern paper for the sign’s backing that I tore to size and also grunged with my stamp pad.
I had a rusty star that I added and a piece of greenery.

To the Santa, I added some sprigs of greenery and holly berries that I tied together with a piece of jute and a vintage skeleton key.

Attaching the Elements to the Sign:
I decided to use hot glue to attach everything to the sign because it is usually fairly easy to pop hot glued items back off later. If, in the future, I decide I want to do something different with the sign board or with the hooked Santa, hopefully I will be able to do so!
I arranged everything on the sign the way I liked it and then hot glued each item onto the board.

I hope this inspires you to make your own hooked rug sign! Be sure to check out our other rug hooking tutorials.
