In this rug hooking tutorial, I will make a hooked rug sunflower. This sunflower can be used as a bowl filler, add it to a crow make-do, or you can add a stem and place it in a floral arrangement. Perhaps with other hooked rug flowers! It has a hooked rug flower center and felted wool sunflower petals.

Make the Sunflower:
Hook a two inch circle on monks cloth using a variety of brown #8 worms. Trim the empty monks cloth to about 1/2″ all the way around and serge the edges. Press the edges to the back. This is the flower center.

Cut 2 -2 inch circles from a gold felted wool.
Place the flower center on top of a piece of tissue paper. Sketch out a rounded triangle shape the right size for a flower petal. Add about 1/8″ to the length on the end. My flower petal is about 1″ wide and about 1-5/8″ long.

Cut 12 petals from this pattern.
Arrange 6 of the petals evenly spaced around the edge of one of the wool circles with about 1/8″ of the petal overlaps onto the circle. Use a running stitch to sew the petals onto the circle. Arrange the other 6 petals in between each of the original petals and sew those onto the circle also.

If you want to add a stem, you can take 2 or 3 floral stems and twist them together to make a stronger stem. Put a coil in the end of the stem.
Using a thread to match the wool, sew the circle with the petals to the hooked center. Whipstitch the edge of the foundation fabric to the edge of the wool circle. Stuff lightly before finishing the whipstitching.

Sew the second wool circle onto the back of the flower, using a whipstitch all the way around the circle. When you have about 3/4 sewn, you can insert the flower stem (if desired) and finish sewing.
