Follow along as I punch the background on this punch needle project using a variegated thread. Punching backgrounds with variegated threads can add interest to your punch needle project.

Punching the Background:
Before I start punching the background, I punch all of the other elements, unless something is going to be punched at a deeper punching depth. I will save the deeper punching depth items for last.
When I start punching the background, I punch all the way around the outside of the project. Then I punch all the way around each of the elements in the project.

This project has some small berries that I am going to fill in with french knots after I finish the rest of the project so I won’t punch in those spots.
For small areas, I will fill in by going around in ‘circles’ until the entire area is punched.

In larger empty areas, I drew in some random S curves and then punched around those.

That will form smaller areas that I can complete as I did the other small areas.
