I designed this free horse punch needle pattern a few years ago based on several different antique hooked rugs featuring horses.
I wanted to share it with all of my blog and Facebook friends, so I have posted it on my Facebook page under the tab “Freebies for Fans”. (Sorry, on Facebook, it is not visible on mobile devices.)

The free horse punch needle pattern has been punched using 3 strands of DMC and Valdani embroidery floss.
Floss colors used:
- Flowers – DMC 918
- Stars – DMC 3828
- Numbers – DMC 3021
- Horse Tail – Valdani H212 – Faded Brown
- Horse – DMC 3021
- Border outer most – DMC 3021
- Border middle – DMC 918
- Border – inner most – DMC 3828
- Background – 2 Strands DMC 3033 & 1 Strand DMC 3021 (Learn more about using multiple colors together to create a mottled look.)
The finished project measures about four inches tall and about seven inches wide. Feel free to resize it if you would prefer a different size.
After I coffee dyed the finished punch needle project, I finished it by mounting it on a wooden horn book and accenting the handle of the board with a key.
