The Ultra punch needle has 12 punching depths and the Smart Punch needle only has 5 settings. So, how do you translate punching depth settings that are listed on a punch needle pattern? In this post, I measured the punching depth of each setting and made a comparison chart for you.

Punching Depth Comparison:
I used a dial caliper to measure the needle punching depths at each punch needle setting. The distance between the eye of the needle and the needle tip on each tool seemed very comparable so I measured the entire length of the exposed needle at each punching depth.
Keep in mind that these are not professional measurements and could have error in them. This is meant to be used only as a guide to help you.
This first table shows you the measurements of the punching depths at each setting on the Ultra Punch needle and the Smart Punch needle. As you can see, the highest setting on the Ultra Punch needle does punch much deeper than the highest setting on the Smart Punch needle.
I usually punch most things at a punching depth of 2 or 3 on the Ultra Punch needle. That translates nicely to a 2 or 3 on the Smart Punch needle.
In this next table, I grouped the comparable punching depths together to help you better visualize the difference.
I hope this helps you. Be sure to check out our other punch needle tutorials.
