Whether you like to punch with an Ultra Punch needle or one of the CTR punch needles, you need to know which punch needle to use for punching with 3 strands of embroidery floss.
Ultra Punch 3 Strand Punching:
Since the Ultra Punch needle comes with 3 different needle tips,
it can be difficult to determine which one to use!
On the blue plastic part of each needle,
if you look closely,
you will find a letter inside a circle, S, M, or L.
This letter indicates the needle’s size.
S is for small, M for medium, and L for large.
According to the manufacturer,
the small needle works with 2-3 strands of embroidery floss
and the medium needle works with 3-6 strands of embroidery floss.
So, you can safely use either the small or medium Ultra Punch needles with 3 strands of embroidery floss.

CTR 3 Strand Punching:
I also use CTR punch needles for punching with 3 strands of embroidery floss.
The 3 strand CTR punch needles come in two different sizes.
The 3 strand red CTR punch needle feels similar to holding a pencil.
It is just the right size to add a pencil grip if you like. (I have one on mine!)
There is also a 3 strand green CTR needle.
It is a bit fatter and might be more comfortable for some people to hold.
(I find it most comfortable for my hands,
but it is definitely a personal preference.)
